First of all let me start by saying I had an absolute blast on my Winter Tour that I have much more to write and share about it! But as I've been thawing out a bit since getting home last Friday I just haven't been motivated to blog much or even take pictures or video tape workouts, and it's been ages since I've felt any kind of motivation to write about eating and food (yes, "dieting"). In my opinion motivation is usually fueled with some kind of "pay off"....hmmn....
It seems like forever since I posted a 10 x 10 Thursday, in fact I think the last one was way back in December when I posted ten of them while I was in Sweden. As I started taping today my motivation was just to express some of the feelings I was having and the traditional 10 x 10 rest intervals were not going to give me the time (or breath) to say some things I wanted to say.
I think I'm going to switch up Thursday workouts to On The Minute (OTM) 10-20 swing rep workouts. That way if there is something on my mind that I want to talk about then I'll get the chance to share some thoughts and train at the same time. That being said if you want to train along with me for 6 minutes, either as a warm up, a cool down, or a short and sweet session please feel free to complete any rep count that is challenging or comfortable for you. I set the Gym Boss in the background every 30 seconds so you can hear when it's time start and to stop swinging ;).
The subject that I wanted to talk about this morning was that when it comes to exercising regularly we all have to find our way doing the training and practice that motivates us individually. Motivation is fueled with a pay off, whether that pay off is seeing the changes in our physical bodies, feeling the change in our work capacity and overall strength and health, or maybe it's just fun! Maybe it's the group or friends we look forward to exercising with, or maybe it's wearing cute workout clothes! Whatever movement / workout motivates you to never miss your practice is the right one for you.
I found the right one for me. Training kettlebells does so many of the things I listed, if not all of them! But that's just me :) It may not be for you.
Swings may not be for you, but I believe that you must choose some way to move your body, if you can, because as we get older, fatter, and weaker, our choices get fewer. You may not have the same beliefs as I do, but I've been on both sides of the fence. I've been extremely overweight and out of shape, and I'm currently a much better body weight and I think I'm pretty fit and strong and there is no way in hell I'm going back. Every part of my life is better, even on my worst days. Motivation to workout is not what's lacking, motivation to try and motivate others is.
Maybe that's not my job. I'll shut up now.
Nice post.
ReplyDeleteI am still swinging myself but found out lately that I really have to keep practicing my squats. I am definitely feeling it if I don't practice them regularly (just more stiff). Maybe part of being 50?
The best way to motivate is to live it! Others will either "fall in" or not.
ReplyDeleteYour job is to take care of you, not everyone else. Not saying you don't care, but you know that you can talk to people till you're blue in the face and they still won't do what would help them live a little longer and a whole lot better.
It's got to be that person's decision to take accountability.
BTW....I love the OTM stuff. I've been doing it a lot since you left.
Well said Diana and I agree with doing the squats Hanneke.
ReplyDeleteTracy, I seem to remember that you started the 10x10 for someone. My guess is they are no better of this year than they were last and you feel responsible. If you still love the 10x10's keep doing them and if not move on. I liked the No Brainer Workouts better but that's just me. I also like the ones where you tape a class workout. And as I told you at the winter class in MN. I'd love to see more beginner workouts on snatches. But you can't do any of your workouts long term for someone else (maybe just the Birthday ones ;)
I've been following you and doing your workouts and videos for 2 years now and I still love them. I learned to swing from your workouts and it just clicked for me. Thanks you for being you and sharing in your passion!
Blessings,
Gwen in MN
Tracy, you just do you and the motivation to others will come. You do not have the power to see everyone you motivate, and believe me it more than you think. Your workouts are awesome, I like all of them from the ladders to the otm stuff. People always wonder why other people help each other, and the answer is because WE CAN! So keep helping others Tracy!
ReplyDeleteHanneke,
ReplyDeleteLOL, I'm always amused at how sore and stiff I am when you think it would be the opposite considering how healthy and fit I feel! I'm learning that what it comes down to is recovery and maintenance between workouts.....going to go foam roller now....
Diana,
ReplyDeleteI'm digging the OTM workouts myself!
I know all that about motivating others, it's just when someone close to me gives up that I feel frustration. But the only life I'm in charge of is my own, and I'm thankful everyday for friends like you and for all the people that take the time to comment about some of the things I write about :)
Hi Gwen!
ReplyDeleteYou are 100% right about why and who motivated me to post the 10 x 10's last year! Actually they are slightly better off, but not because of the 10 x 10's. They had to find their own way, and that's what we all have to do. so more power to everybody!
10 x 10's are hard! I make my class do them twice a month so I challenge you to do them too (5 rounds of 10 x 10's equal work to rest = 500 sw 25 min)
We do them the first Tuesday, and the last Sat of the month fyi :)
When I come out next year let's get together and practice snatches!
Lonnie,
ReplyDeleteYou are 100% right on! I know but frustration creeps in when someone close to me is involved.
And to be honest, my workouts help me, and a lot of times video taping them keeps me honest, so the fact that other people benefit is a bonus :)
thanks for your comment :)
